“It's through increasing your awareness that you can take charge of your internal experience of life—and your external results.”

If you’ve ever experienced trauma in your life - and let’s be honest, most of us have - you know how deeply it can affect not just your heart, but your mind.
What many people don’t realize is that trauma isn’t just emotional...
It actually changes your brain.
That’s why this week I’m sharing an insightful essay from Mind Power Managing Editor Ryan Standifird that dives into how trauma rewires your brain - and more importantly, what you can do to rewire it back.
You’ll learn how trauma impacts critical brain networks, why it can feel so hard to break free from old patterns, and the science-backed ways you can start to heal.
It’s a powerful reminder that your brain is not set in stone; it’s adaptable, changeable, and ready for growth.
If you’ve ever felt trapped by the effects of past pain, I hope this gives you a glimpse of hope - and practical steps you can take to move forward.
With love and hope,

How Trauma Changes the Brain
(& What You Can Do to Fix it)
By Ryan Standifird
Almost everyone has been exposed to a traumatic event at some point during their lifetime.
Whether you were bullied as a child, suffered from neglectful caregivers growing up or were betrayed by someone you trusted, these events took a toll on your happiness…
…and on your brain!
In fact, studies show that traumatic events not only have a lasting impact on our behavior and sense of self, but when left untreated they can literally change our neurobiology in harmful ways.
So, how does trauma affect your brain? Let’s take a look.
The Parts of the Brain Impacted By Trauma
According to Ruth Lanius, MD, PhD, trauma can disrupt three critical brain networks:
1. Default Mode Network (DMN) – This network helps you process emotions, memories, and your sense of self. Trauma can make it difficult to understand your own feelings, disconnect you from your body, and impair your ability to recall memories.
2. Salience Network – This is the part of your brain that determines what is important in your environment. After trauma, it often becomes overactive, keeping you in a state of hypervigilance and anxiety. On the flip side, it can also become underactive, making it hard to recognize danger, which can lead to repeated patterns of trauma.
3. Central Executive Network (CEN) – Responsible for focus, attention, and planning. Trauma can disrupt these functions, leading to problems with concentration, memory, and decision-making. This is often why childhood trauma is mistaken for ADHD.
If any of these parts of the brain are being affected by your trauma, what can you do about it?
Well, just as trauma can disrupt parts of your brain, you can also take action to intentionally change your brain for the better.
The Power of Neuroplasticity
One of the most remarkable qualities of the brain is its ability to adapt and change - a process known as neuroplasticity.
Neuroplasticity is your brain's ability to rewire itself based on new experiences, thoughts, and behaviors. This adaptability is how we learn new skills, form new memories, and even recover from brain injuries.
When trauma disrupts normal brain function, neuroplasticity becomes your greatest ally in the healing process. Just as repeated negative experiences can wire your brain for fear, anxiety, or hypervigilance, intentional positive experiences can rewire it for peace, resilience, and well-being.
There are four ways that neuroplasticity occurs:
Neurogenesis – New neurons are generated in specific regions of the brain.
New Synapses – New experiences forge new neural connections.
Strengthened Synapses – Repetition of thoughts and behaviors solidifies these connections.
Weakened Synapses – When certain thought patterns are not used, they weaken and fade over time.
This means that even if trauma has left you feeling stuck or emotionally triggered, you can intentionally reshape those patterns.
And one of the most powerful ways to accelerate this neuroplasticity is through meditation - especially with tools like Holosync.
Meditation Enhances Neuroplasticity & Heals the Brain
Meditation is a powerful way to soothe the mind, enhance well-being, and even improve neuroplasticity.
Studies using MRI scans have shown that regular meditation can increase the thickness of the prefrontal cortex, the area of the brain responsible for decision-making, attention, and self-control.
This improves the connections within the Default Mode Network (DMN), healing the damage that trauma can cause to this part of the brain. As a result, folks become more aware of their thoughts and emotions, improving self-regulation and reducing feelings of disconnection.
Meditation has also been found to enhance the Central Executive Network (CEN) by boosting attention and focus. Regular meditators often report an increased ability to concentrate and remain present, which is crucial for breaking free from trauma-induced mental fog.
Meditation is also particularly effective at quieting the Salience Network, calming the brain's hypervigilant response to perceived threats. This helps reduce anxiety and promotes a sense of safety and calmness.
Meditation creates a fertile ground for neuroplasticity to flourish. By consistently practicing, you forge new neural pathways that support peace, emotional regulation, and mental clarity. Over time, these pathways grow stronger, making it easier to maintain a state of calm resilience, even in the face of life's challenges.
