“When you practice doing anything, including thinking about yourself in a new way, your brain devotes more brain real estate to that function, and you get better at it.”- Bill Harris

Have you ever gone to bed frustrated by a problem…
…only to wake up with the answer staring you right in the face?
You see, your brain doesn't clock out when you fall asleep. While you're dreaming, it's busy making connections, working through challenges and finding solutions your conscious mind would never reach.
That's why today I'm sharing a fascinating essay from Mind Power Managing Editor Ryan Standifird about how your dreaming brain actually solves problems.
Ryan explores new groundbreaking research that proves your dreams aren't just random nighttime entertainment - they're your brain's creative workshop.
And when you learn to work with them, you unlock a powerful tool for insight and breakthroughs.
You'll discover exactly how scientists proved this works, plus three practical ways to harness your dream power tonight.
I know you're going to love this one!

Just “Sleep On It”
How Your Dreaming Brain Solves Problems
By Ryan Standifird
A couple weeks ago when the Oregon sky gave us a rare winter weekend of sun, I decided this was my chance to take my ‘66 Mustang out for a spin.
But then I ran into a problem… I couldn’t find my car keys.
I went through all of our junk drawers. I checked the kids' playpen. I looked in closets, between couch cushions and under car seats.
But try as I might, I just couldn’t track down these keys!
After spending all morning searching to no avail, eventually I had to give up.
And that night, as I laid in bed, I couldn’t help but think about my lost keys and I decided to try the oldest trick in the book…
I slept on it.
And when I woke up, the solution was right there! Of course, my keys were in a jacket pocket all along!
The answer came so easily in the morning. Why?
Maybe I just needed some space from the problem. Maybe it was because I’d already looked everywhere else.
Or maybe my dreams were actually doing some serious problem-solving while I slept.
Dreams Aren't Random
You’ve probably heard the advice to "just sleep on it" when you’re stuck on something difficult.
I’d always assumed it was because creating some distance between yourself and the problem lets you come back with fresh eyes and ideas.
But now scientists have stumbled upon the real reason that “sleeping on it” creates much more effective answers.
It turns out that while we sleep, our dreams are hard at work solving problems - whether it’s relationship issues, work challenges, or even locating our lost car keys.
And you don’t have to take my word for it.
Scientists at Northwestern University figured out a way to test this dream theory in a controlled lab setting for the first time.
And their findings may change the way you think about your dreams.
Planting Ideas in Dreams Isn’t Just for the Big Screen
In a fascinating new study published in Neuroscience of Consciousness, scientists discovered that they could actually trigger the creative problem solving power of dreams.
Here's how they did it:
The researchers had 20 participants (all experienced with lucid dreaming) attempt to solve a series of challenging brain teasers.
Each puzzle was also paired with its own unique soundtrack that played in the background while the participant was trying to solve it.
Most of the puzzles were intentionally too difficult to solve in the short time given, so many of the puzzles were left unsolved by the time the session was over.
Then the participants spent the night in the lab while researchers monitored their brain activity and initiated the second phase of the experiment.
During Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep - the stage where vivid dreaming happens - the scientists played the soundtracks associated with half of the unsolved puzzles.
This technique is called "targeted memory reactivation."
By using specific sound cues associated with the unsolved puzzles, it triggered the memories of those puzzles to be brought forward in the sleeping brain, gently steering those dreams toward those unsolved puzzles.

So - what did they find?
Upon waking, an astonishing 75% of participants reported dreams that included elements related to the puzzles they'd been cued about during their sleep!
But that's not all.
When participants woke up and tried the puzzles again…
They solved the dream-related puzzles at more than double the rate of the unfinished puzzles that weren’t cued during their dreams.
According to the data, the participants had a 42% success rate for puzzles that appeared in dreams compared to just 17% for the others.
That’s huge!
By simply playing a sound during sleep, researchers were able to guide dreams and boost problem-solving ability.
It’s solid proof that our dreams hold immense potential for helping us improve our lives.
Why REM Sleep Is Your Creative Powerhouse
So what's happening in your brain during REM sleep that makes this possible?
During REM sleep, your brain enters a unique state of consciousness where your emotional centers light up, your inner critic goes quiet, and judgment and resistance drop away.
This is exactly the environment creativity thrives in.
When you're dreaming, your brain can make connections it wouldn't normally make while you're awake. It can approach problems from angles you'd never consciously consider.
Your sleeping brain isn't limited by logic, social norms, or past failures.
It's free to explore… experiment… and find solutions you'd never arrive at through conscious effort alone.
You Don't Need to Lucid Dream to Benefit
Now, you might be thinking: "But I can’t lucid dream. Does this still apply to me?"
Yes!
One of the biggest surprises from the study was how strongly the sound cues influenced dreams even when participants weren't lucid dreaming.
One dreamer, cued with a trees-related puzzle, woke up from a dream of walking through a forest.
Another, cued with a jungle puzzle, dreamed she was fishing in the jungle while thinking about that exact problem.
One participant even asked a dream character for help solving the puzzle.
Their unconscious minds were actively working on the problems naturally, without them being aware that they were dreaming at all.
This means you don't need any special lucid dream skills to harness the problem-solving power of sleep.
Your brain is already doing this work naturally.
The question is… are you supporting it? Or getting in the way?
3 Ways to Harness Your Dream Power
So how can you use this information to solve problems and boost creativity in your own life?
Here are three practical tips:
Tip #1: Prime Your Mind Before Sleep
Before you go to bed, spend a few minutes thinking about a problem you're trying to solve or a creative project you're working on.
Don't stress about it. Don't try to force a solution.
Just review the challenge. Hold it lightly in your awareness.
Then let it go and trust your sleeping brain to do its work.
This simple act of "priming" can help direct your dreams toward productive problem-solving.
Tip #2: Keep a Dream Journal
When you wake up - especially from a vivid dream - write down whatever you remember as quickly as possible.
Dreams fade fast. Within minutes, 95% of dream content is typically forgotten.
But if you capture even fragments, you might find surprising insights related to challenges you're facing.
You don't need to analyze or interpret. Just record.
Over time, you'll start noticing patterns - and solutions.
Tip #3: Support Your REM Sleep with Meditation
Here's the thing about all this dream-powered problem-solving:
It only works if you're actually getting quality REM sleep.
And quality REM sleep is tough to get when you're overwhelmed by stress.
That's where meditation comes in - especially with Holosync.
Meditation calms your nervous system, quiets mental chatter, and creates better conditions for deep, restorative sleep.
The more relaxed you are when you go to sleep, the better your dreams can work for you.

Trust Your Sleeping Genius
You know, we spend about a third of our lives sleeping.
And for most of that time, our brains are doing remarkable work we're barely aware of.
Processing emotions. Consolidating memories. And yes… solving problems creatively.
Your dreams aren't just random noise.
They're an intelligent, purposeful process.
And when you learn to work with that process instead of ignoring it… you unlock a powerful tool for creativity, insight, and growth.
So tonight, before you drift off…
Think about that challenge you've been stuck on.
Hold it gently. Then let it go.
And trust your sleeping brain to surprise you.
Sweet dreams!

Wise Words
“Your dreams aren't just random noise. They're an intelligent, purposeful process.”

This Really Happened
"Hello I was just wanting to say that I listened to all 4 tracks for the first time after purchase, before I slept that night.
When I awoke in the morning, I realized that my dreams were more vivid and I remembered the last dream. And importantly, I took a few minutes to recall what it meant and what I could learn from it.
And then I realized it programmed my brain to do that.
I think this is going to work.”
