“Being in the now moment is something you do, not something that just happens. And the way you do ‘being in the now moment’ is by being aware.” - Bill Harris
Issue #481 – Monday, June 23, 2025
Have you ever found yourself so caught up and distracted by your phone that you are no longer present?
Or maybe you’ve tried to be more productive by doing three things at once…
…only to fail at all of them!
That’s the topic of this week's Mind Power essay by Centerpointe CEO MaryEllen Tribby.
MaryEllen dives into a powerful realization she had during an ordinary day at the gym—a reminder of how easy it is to get swept up in distractions and miss the very moments that make life meaningful.
She’ll reveal the power that presence brings, and how you can get more of it in your life.
If you’ve been craving more clarity, more peace, and more real connection, you won’t want to miss this one.
Enjoy the read!

Leave the iPhone. Take the Cannoli
By MaryEllen Tribby, CEO of Centerpointe
It was actually painful to watch.
I was on the treadmill at the gym listening to Bono wishing me a Beautiful Day when, out of the corner of my eye, I couldn’t help but notice a very animated woman.
She was standing on the treadmill across from me. Her arms were flailing and her facial expressions were Broadway-level dramatic.
Finally, I realized she was yelling into her iPhone.
I momentarily paused Bono and shifted my full attention to this extremely agitated woman. Apparently, she was chastising her assistant for a mistake made at the office yesterday. By now, she had the attention of several stunned gym-goers, myself included.
After several minutes, the call ended. I thought, “Great, now everyone can get back to their workouts.” But to my surprise, she immediately made another call.
Clearly this time she was talking or rather, screaming at her child. Apparently, little Susie hadn’t cleaned her room, and now she was enduring the wrath of Mom.
Again, we all watched in disbelief.
Ten minutes later, she stepped off the treadmill and headed to the locker room.
Growing Disbelief
After she was out of sight, I tried to return to my workout. But now it was impossible not to notice the number of people around me glued to their phones while allegedly "working out."
Some were clearly chatting casually. But many were visibly stressed, conducting intense business conversations while barely moving their legs. They weren’t working out, they were working in the chaos.
Instead of relieving stress, their phones were fueling stress.
Listen to Your Godfather
There’s a brilliant scene in the iconic movie The Godfather.
Clemenza, one of Don Corleone’s henchmen, is in a car with two associates. He's under orders: only one of them is supposed to make it back.
He tells the driver to pull over because he "has to take a leak." As Clemenza steps away, the man in the back seat “takes care of business.” Just another day in the mafia.
But here's what makes this scene unforgettable: after the deed is done, Clemenza walks back to the car and says to his partner…
“Leave the gun. Take the cannoli.”
Six words. A full manifesto.
Even hitmen know when it's time to work and when it's time to refuel.
The 'Present' is a Gift
Like the women on the treadmill, many people miss the moment they’re actually in.
They're planning tomorrow, regretting yesterday and mentally managing 14 things at once.
And the irony?
We often say we want to feel more peace, more presence, more connection, yet we sabotage those very desires by staying tethered to our devices.
Let’s change that.
Here are three powerful practices to help you reclaim your focus, energy and joy:
1) Be Where Your Feet Are
Whether you’re at the gym, having dinner, or in a meeting - be there. Fully.
When I work out, my phone stays in the locker. I listen to music on my old fashioned ipod (yes it still works!). When I’m out with my husband, I silence my phone and tuck it away. If I check messages, it’s only briefly, in private. That way, I can be present with the people I love. I can be present with myself.
And you know what? The world doesn’t end when I’m unreachable for a couple of hours.
2) Control Your Calendar Before It Controls You
The way you start your day sets the tone for how your brain and your life function. Instead of reacting to incoming chaos, take 10 minutes each morning to proactively map out your day.
Use time blocks. Set boundaries. And for the love of sanity, schedule your self-care. Your workout. Your meditation. Your down time. Put it on the calendar like any other non-negotiable meeting.
Because if you don’t prioritize your peace, no one else will.
3) Ditch the Multitasking Myth
Multitasking is a liar.
It doesn’t make you more productive. It makes you more distracted, more anxious and more prone to mistakes. Your brain simply can not handle multi-tasking.
Want to be better at everything? Do one thing at a time.
When you meditate, meditate. When you eat, eat. When you work, work. When you relax, relax.
The more presence you bring to each moment, the more power you bring to your life.

This Really Happened
I have a busy schedule that changes frequently. The app helps me no matter what time I have it open. I've even listened in my vehicle before going in to work so I have a great start to my day.
