The Healing Power of Listening

“Watch the process. Don't try to change it. Just watch.  It will change itself.”

Have you ever noticed how good it feels when someone truly listens to you?

I’m not talking about a distracted “uh-huh” while their eyes are on their phone.

I mean the kind of listening where you feel understood, valued and seen.

In today’s fast-paced world, that kind of genuine attention is getting more and more rare…

And yet it might be one of the most powerful forms of healing we have.

That’s why today I’m sharing an enlightening essay with you from Mind Power Managing Editor Ryan Standifird.

Ryan explores the science and practice of listening in a whole new way, and breaking down six listening techniques you can use to be a better listener.

Because listening is much more than just polite conversation.

It’s medicine for the mind, body and spirit.

I know you’re going to love this!

Cheers,

The Healing Power of Listening
6 Ways Lending an Ear Can Be Potent Medicine

By Ryan Standifird

Have you gone to the doctor recently? What was that whole process like?

For most people, locking in a doctor’s appointment requires that you have to call a few weeks in advance. Then they want you to show up to the appointment a little early so you can fill out some paperwork. After that, you wait at least 10 minutes before you get called into the exam room where a nurse does a preliminary health screening and then you wait around some more.

Even if your appointment was scheduled for 10:00 AM, you might not actually see your doctor until 10:30, 11, or even later.

Speeding up that process sounds great, right?

But now imagine this…

The doctor finally enters your room, asks about your health problem that brought you in, looks over the health screening from the nurse, then nods their head and says, “Okay, I’m going to prescribe you this medicine. Take it twice a day. The nurse will go over the instructions.”

Then they leave. The whole process from the doctor entering to leaving took maybe 5 minutes. No follow up questions. Minimal eye contact. One large bill at the end.

What do you think? Would you be satisfied with that kind of care?

Or would you rather the doctor took the time to really listen and understand you, to ask questions about your life, to convey that they genuinely care about your health and are doing their best to help you?

Which method leads to better results?

Moving at the Speed of Health

Everything is speeding up these days. From AI-powered fast food lines to next-day delivery, companies are trying to deliver more results at faster speeds. The American health care system is also looking to streamline its processes to serve an ever-growing amount of patients.

But faster results often come with a sacrifice, and Dr. Leonard Berry of Texas A&M University's Mays Business School is worried that the human element of good health care is the first thing that’s getting pushed aside for the sake of speed.

So Dr. Berry and colleagues at the Institute for Healthcare Improvement in Boston and Henry Ford Health Detroit recently published an essay in Mayo Clinic Proceedings called The Value — and the Values — of Listening.

In their essay, these leaders in healthcare expand on what they call “values-driven listening” which they claim is essential to creating better relationships between clinicians and their patients (and even amongst clinicians and their coworkers) which leads to more trust and better outcomes.

They outline six values-driven listening techniques that are most effective and that should be implemented when possible:

#1: Proximate Listening

Being physically present makes a big difference in the quality of a relationship. Much more can be learned from an in-person conversation than an online questionnaire. Direct eye contact, focus and genuine interest leads to more trust, which leads to more open conversations and better decision-making.

#2: Curious Listening

Curiosity is a powerful way to build trust and learn the full scope of someone’s situation. Asking open-ended questions can create a more confident conversation and you can often grasp some bigger context. Use body language that shows you are engaged and listening.

#3: Listening That Earns & Enables Trust

Engage in therapeutic listening, which is nonjudgemental and features open-ended questions. Try summarizing what they say to show you understand. The goal is to figure out not just what's wrong, but what truly matters to the other person, recognizing that they know their own priorities best. Even trained clinicians struggle with this if they don't have enough time to connect with the patient.

#4: Design-Aided Listening

Ideally, a conversation should happen in a private setting without distractions. In situations where a room must be shared, sit down to show you are fully engaged in listening and not distracted or multitasking.

#5: Empowering Listening

Listening should empower, meaning that not only can you hear the person, but you take what they say into consideration and act on it. This can help with creating a plan of action both between doctors and patients but also between staff of every level when it comes to improving the workplace.

#6: Resilience-building Listening

Caring for others is tough. Doctors, nurses, and healthcare workers of all kinds put in a lot of time and energy looking after the needs of others. And this often leads to burnout, which can make doing the job more difficult and lead to mistakes. This can be helped by simply spending time together outside of work responsibilities. Sitting down with each other and sharing a meal, swapping stories and building a sense of community leads to the kind of resilience-building listening that can help overcome burnout while creating an uplifting work environment.

Better Listening in Your Life, Better Results

You probably aren’t a doctor or healthcare worker. But these listening techniques aren’t just for trained healthcare professionals. After all, we all take on that caregiver role from time to time.

So when a friend or family member reaches out to you with a problem, now you can use these value-driven listening techniques to more effectively engage with them, strengthen your bond, and find a better solution together.

You also now know what to look for when you’re assessing whether your current physician is giving you the level of attention you deserve, or is treating you like just another order to be filled.

And if you ever want someone to really listen to you with curiosity, empathy and understanding…

I recommend giving our outstanding coaching team a call.

Many of our Holosync programs and courses come with unlimited coaching included, which is a powerful resource that leverages values-driven listening techniques like these to help you improve your life, no matter what challenges you face.

Because when we feel heard and understood, we can be more confident moving forward towards our goals. That’s true whether we’re trying to improve our health, make more money, or just find someone who can love us for who we are.

Remember: listening holds immense healing power when it’s done with intention.

Are you being heard?

Echoes of the Ancestors

A Meditation Journey for Healing the Lineage

Your ancestors passed down more than your eye color or your last name. They also passed down patterns — some empowering, others painful.

This is called epigenetics, and it’s one reason patterns like fear, shame or even scarcity can show up in your life without an obvious cause.

Echoes of the Ancestors was designed to help you:

  • Heal the emotional and energetic patterns inherited from your lineage

  • Reclaim the wisdom, resilience, and strength of those who came before

  • Create new patterns that bless your children, grandchildren, and beyond

  • Feel a deep sense of belonging and connection to your place in the human story

Through grounding ancestral rhythms, harmonic overtone frequencies, and Holosync’s brain-enhancing precision audio, this suite takes you deep into the energetic stream of your bloodline to release what no longer serves you and anchor the strengths you want to carry forward.
