The Choice is Yours

Every day, every single moment we are doing one of two things:
We are either self-harming or we are self-healing.
Not with razor blades. Not with bottles of wine. Not with pills or other dangerous choices.
Those are the obvious versions.
The more common forms of self-harm are far quieter, far more socially acceptable… and far more devastating.
It’s the thoughts you replay. The anger you hold. The resentment you feed.
The fear you rehearse in your mind long before anything even happens.
Most people never think of these things as self-harm, but they are. And in many ways, they’re even more damaging because they’re invisible. You can hide them from others.
Sometimes you can even hide them from yourself, at least for a while.
But your body feels every ounce of it.
The Harm No One Sees - But Everyone Feels
When we think angry thoughts, hateful thoughts, or fearful thoughts, our bodies respond on a biological level. Stress hormones surge. Blood pressure rises. Inflammation increases. Your heart works harder. Your immune system weakens.
Science has proven this again and again, your emotional state directly affects your physical state.
And here’s the cruel twist:
Most people walk around believing their stress is caused by circumstances.
In reality, it’s caused by their thoughts about their circumstances.
When you replay old pain…
When you assume the worst…
When you speak to yourself in ways you would never speak to someone you love…
You are, without realizing it, harming your internal organs, your hormonal balance, your sleep, your digestion, your energy, your resiliency, your joy.
You are essentially cutting yourself from the inside out.
This is why I say, lovingly and with complete compassion:
Self-harm isn’t always visible, but it is always impactful.
But here’s the miracle…
Just as the body responds to negative thoughts, it also responds beautifully to positive ones.
Your Thoughts Are Medicine
When you speak words like love, peace, gratitude, joy, contentment, and compassion…
When you allow these words to live in your mind, echo in your chest, and rise through your breath…
Your entire physiology changes:
The body calms.
The heart slows.
The immune system strengthens.
Cells repair faster.
Your mental clarity returns.
Your creativity awakens.
Your optimism becomes easier.
Your sleep deepens.
Your energy rises.
This isn’t wishful thinking. This is biology, neuroscience, and chemistry.
Your thoughts create your emotional state. Your emotional state creates your hormones. Your hormones create your long-term physical reality.
You are always creating something.
The question is simply:
Are you creating harm… or healing?
The Moment You Choose Healing, Everything Shifts
Healing doesn’t require a big ritual, a perfect meditation room or a dramatic life pivot.
Healing begins the instant you choose a more loving thought.
The moment you interrupt the spiral. The moment you choose compassion over criticism. The moment you choose gratitude over fear. The moment you choose peace over pressure.
Your physiology notices instantly.
Healing begins the moment you say:
“I deserve better thoughts than this.”“My body deserves better energy than this.”“My mind deserves better words than this.”
Because you do.
So many of us spend years hurting ourselves with our own thoughts, even while caring for others with so much tenderness.
It's time to redirect that tenderness inward.
It’s time to become your own healer.
Here are five simple, powerful ways to begin self-healing right now.
Five Ways to Self-Heal
1. Carry the Word “JOY” With You
This may sound simple, but do not underestimate it.
Write the word JOY on a small piece of paper and carry it in your pocket, your purse, or even inside your phone case. Every time your hand brushes against it or you catch a glimpse of it, you give your nervous system a micro-dose of healing.
Your body responds. Your mind shifts. That tiny piece of paper becomes a tiny piece of medicine.
2. Keep a Gratitude Journal
If you want to transform your emotional state quickly - start here.
Each morning or evening, write down three things you are grateful for. They can be profound or simple. “My children.” “The birds outside my window.” “My warm coffee.” “A kind email.” “I made it through a tough day.”
Gratitude rewires your brain. It gently lifts you out of fear and back into possibility.
Your body responds in powerful ways: lowered cortisol, increased dopamine, and deeper sleep.
Gratitude is biologically healing.
3. Pattern Interrupt Your Inner Critic
The inner critic is the biggest source of invisible self-harm.
When you catch yourself saying:
“I’m not enough.”“I’m failing.”“I’m too this or too that.”
Stop.
Literally say out loud: “Not today.”
Then replace it with something true and nurturing:
“I’m learning.”“I’m capable.”“I’m showing up.”“I’m doing my best.”
Interrupting the pattern is what breaks the cycle. Replacing the thought is what begins the healing.
4. Surround Yourself With Uplifting Inputs
Healing requires nourishing your mind with better energy.
Listen to music that opens your heart.
Read books that comfort or inspire you.
Watch shows that make you laugh.
Spend time with people who feel like sunshine, not storms.
Your environment is always talking to your nervous system. Make sure it speaks love, not fear.
