The New and Improved Vitamin C

Not long ago, I was standing in line at the grocery store when I noticed something. Every single person around me, from the college kid in sweats to the gentleman in a business suit all had their heads down, glued to their phones.
No one looked up. No one smiled. No one acknowledged anyone else.
It reminded me of how different things used to be.
I remember back in the day (ha ha) when I was a new mom, and I’d be out running errands with my little ones. Older folks would come up to me and ask about the babies. Other parents would strike up a conversation, offer tips, share stories, or simply say, “You’ve got your hands full!”
It was ordinary. And it was wonderful. Those spontaneous moments of connection used to happen all the time.
And I thought, When did we become so connected to the digital world… and so disconnected from each other?
We all know that Vitamin C, the one you get from oranges and supplements is essential for a healthy immune system.
But today, I want to talk about a different kind of Vitamin C.
Connection.
Human. Real. Face-to-face. Soul-nourishing connection.
Because the truth is, it’s just as vital to your health; mental, emotional and even physical as any nutrient.
The Loneliness Epidemic (and What It’s Doing to Us)
We live in a world that’s never been more technologically connected… yet loneliness is at an all-time high.
And it’s taking a toll:
A Harvard study found that loneliness is just as deadly as smoking 15 cigarettes a day.
Chronic loneliness has been linked to increased inflammation, higher risk of heart disease and cognitive decline.
The U.S. Surgeon General recently declared loneliness a public health crisis.
Why? Because we’re wired for connection.
It’s not just a nice-to-have - it’s a need.
The Blue Zones Secret
You’ve probably heard of Blue Zones. They’re those fascinating parts of the world where people regularly live to 100 and beyond.
Researchers studied what these communities had in common and found some surprising things:
It wasn’t trendy diets.
It wasn’t fancy supplements.
It wasn’t even cutting-edge medicine.
The number one factor? Community.
In Blue Zones like Sardinia, Okinawa and Nicoya, people don’t live in isolation.
They’re surrounded by family, friends and neighbors. They share meals. They check in on each other. They move through life together.
This kind of connection reduces stress, fosters purpose and supports emotional health and wellbeing, all of which are essential to longevity.
So Why Are We More Disconnected Than Ever?
Let’s be honest. Our phones, for all the convenience they offer, are robbing us of the very thing we crave most.
We scroll through curated highlight reels on social media instead of sharing real moments. We text instead of talk. We email instead of embrace.
And beyond the digital distractions, modern life has simply become more isolated. More of us work remotely. We shop online. We exercise solo. We live farther from extended family. Even community spaces like churches, schools and libraries are seeing less day-to-day engagement.
So while our calendars might be full, our hearts often aren’t.
And we wonder why we feel so anxious, so flat and so alone.
It’s Time to Reclaim Connection
I’m not suggesting we throw out our devices or move to a remote village (although unplugged weekends are lovely!).
What I am suggesting is this:
Let’s make intentional, real-world connection a “daily vitamin” in our lives.
It doesn’t have to be a grand community-wide social event. Start small.
Here are some ways to take your daily dose of the new Vitamin C:
Reach out to someone today - not with a text, but with your voice. Call a friend. FaceTime a sibling. Let them hear you.
Smile at a stranger. You’d be amazed what one warm smile can do - for both of you.
Schedule weekly in-person time. Whether it’s a coffee with a neighbor, dinner with family, or a walk with a friend, put it on your calendar and protect it.
Join something. A book club, a meditation group, a yoga class. Get out and be around other people with shared interests.
Be fully present. When you're with someone, be with them. Put the phone away. Make eye contact. Listen deeply.
What This Has to Do with Your Brain
At Centerpointe, we talk a lot about your brain. And for good reason.
When your brain is calm, balanced and well-regulated, everything else in life improves.
But guess what?
Connection helps regulate the brain, too.
Oxytocin (the "connection hormone") is released through physical touch and face-to-face interaction.
Social bonding lowers cortisol and reduces the body’s stress response.
Shared laughter boosts dopamine and serotonin.
In short, when you connect, I mean really connect, your brain heals.
And when your brain heals, so does your body, your heart, your energy and your perspective.
