Does your mood change with the seasons?
You see, our brains are not static - they’re dynamic, adaptable, and deeply responsive to the world around us.
And nowhere is that more obvious than when the seasons change.
To help you understand why that is, I’m sharing a mind-opening essay with you today from Mind Power Managing Editor Ryan Standifird.
Ryan explores one of the most fascinating recent discoveries about how your brain tracks the shifting rhythms of dawn and dusk—and how those rhythms can directly influence your sleep, your mood, and your mental clarity.
If you’ve ever felt “off” during certain times of year, or noticed how your energy rises with the sunshine (and dips with the clouds), you’re not imagining it.
Ryan breaks down the new science behind our two internal clocks and shares practical ways to reset them when life throws them out of sync.
I know you’re going to love this!
Cheers,

What Are Your Two Circadian Rhythms Telling You?
By Ryan Standifird
It’s summertime here in Portland, Oregon. The birds are singing, the bugs are chirping, and the local parks are filled with smiling families enjoying the warm weather.
Here in a part of the world that’s cold and rainy for much of the year, summer brings with it an uplifting vibe of excitement, fun and potential. Everyone seems happier; more alive during the summer months.
As someone who grew up in sun-soaked Southern California, even I have developed a newfound appreciation for summer’s sunshine that makes me feel more optimistic and energetic throughout the day.
This isn’t all in my head, either. It’s in my genes!
Our Genetic Calendar
Scientists have recently made some major discoveries when it comes to our circadian rhythm.
Conventionally, it’s been thought that your circadian rhythm - your internal, biological clock - helps your brain and body know when it’s time to sleep and recharge, and when it’s time to wake up and get going for the day.
For example, your circadian rhythm tells your brain when it’s time to start releasing melatonin, the hormone that relaxes you and prepares you for sleep, and acetylcholine, the neurotransmitter that helps rouse the brain from slumber.
In a recent scientific study, researchers from the University of Michigan took genetic samples of participants, and then tracked their sleep patterns, energy levels, and the various working times (day shift or night shift) over the course of a year.
They wanted to see whether some people were able to better adapt to a change in their work shifts, and whether the time of year and/or their genes had any impact on their ability to adapt.
What did they find?
Not only did they link that ability to adapt to the season and the change in sleep schedule to specific genes…
…but it also turns out that we don’t have just one circadian rhythm.
We have two!
According to the researchers…
One of our circadian rhythms tracks the dawn, while the other tracks dusk.
What’s more, each of these internal clocks need to communicate to each other so that they are on the same page.
And when the seasons change, meaning the timing of our dawn and dusk changes, our circadian rhythms have to coordinate effectively so that they can change with them, or it could lead to all sorts of issues.
For example, Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) also known as “seasonal depression,” affects over 10 million Americans each winter. Those who experience SAD often have less energy and may experience sleeping problems, weight gain, trouble concentrating, mood instability and more.
But this new research backs up the theory that SAD is not a psychological issue, but actually a genetic, biological problem, unlocking more effective treatment options.
Influencing Your Circadian Rhythms
If you’re feeling low energy, having difficulty sleeping, or getting more moody than usual, it could be that your circadian rhythms are out of sync.
So, what can you do about it?
Here are some easy tips that can help give your circadian rhythms an advantage any time of year:
Block the Blue Light at Night
Our phones, computer screens and televisions use a lot of blue light in their displays. Blue light mimics the same light wavelength as sunlight. That means that when we’re exposed to blue light, it can affect our circadian rhythms. Some options to reduce blue light exposure is to abstain from screens after the sun goes down, wear blue light blocker glasses, or to enable “night light” mode which is a setting on some computers and phones that change the backlight to a yellow light rather than a blue light.
Go Outside During the Day
Regular sunlight exposure doesn’t just give you a healthy dose of Vitamin D. It also helps your circadian rhythms stabilize. Studies show that those who go outside more often have better sleep, which helps your circadian rhythms stay in sync. Whether you take a walk in the local park or spend a day at the beach, getting outside tunes your brain and your body to your environment.
Use Sleep Entrainment Tools Like Holosync
Your circadian rhythms impact your sleep, and your sleep impacts your circadian rhythms. This means that tools like Holosync Sleep Suite II, which puts your brain into an optimal sleep cycle, can help you naturally reset your circadian rhythms leading to better sleep quality and duration.
The More We Learn, the More We Benefit
As we continue to learn more about the brain, like the fact that we have two circadian rhythms and that our genetics play a big role in our ability to adapt our circadian rhythms, that awareness empowers us.
Because rather than believing that there’s nothing we can do to help our situation, we can instead take intentional actions to set ourselves up for more success and happiness.
So the next time your circadian rhythms get thrown off, remember that there are things you can do to make them right again.
Until next time, I hope you have a wonderful summer!
