Bill Harris was one of the greatest teachers in the world of personal development. 

He had a deep understanding of the complexities of the human condition and an incredible amount of wisdom that he shared with millions of people all over the world.

I remember sitting in his office on many occasions when he would say something so simple and so profound that he nearly knocked me out of my chair. 

Over the years, we’ve collected many of Bill’s sayings. 

His concepts were woven throughout his teachings, support material, videos and online courses, all of which are truly life-changing. 

To celebrate the life, wisdom and legacy of our founder and friend, Bill Harris, I want to share my top five favorite quotes, what they mean, and how you can apply them today to make your life better.

  1. As Goes Your Brain, So Goes Your Life

“Everyone who wants a better life should be meditating.”

-Bill Harris

Scientists have discovered that all your thoughts, feelings and actions start in one place: 

Your brain. 

So it stands to reason that if you change your brain, everything else will automatically follow suit. 

In fact, when you learn to use your brain in the right way, you can control the thoughts, feelings and actions that are responsible for your results in life. 

Study after study has shown that the #1 best way to physically change the structure of your brain is meditation.

Meditation enhances the prefrontal cortex, the part of your brain responsible for executive function, rational thinking, higher learning, calmness, empathy and integrative experiences. 

At the same time, it soothes the limbic system, the part of the brain associated with not-always-so-good things such as the  “fight or flight” response, high stress, impulsive behavior and reactivity.

One of the key benefits of a brain enhanced by meditation is that it increases your awareness. Here’s why awareness is so important:

  1. Awareness Creates Choice

Awareness is your ability to emotionally detach from what is happening in and around you in order to view it from a completely objective, curious point of view.

In this way, you can observe a thought, feeling or action for what it is and decide to let it go if it doesn’t serve you.

The bedrock of Bill Harris’s teachings is embodied in this seminal quote: Awareness creates choice. 

Bill also went further and said, with enough awareness, you will automatically choose what serves you…

...and drop what doesn’t.

  1. Let Whatever Happens Be Okay

“If you can just step back and watch whatever is happening, the resistance disappears.”

The amount a person suffers in their life is directly related to how much they are resisting the fact that “things are the way they are.” 

This has got to be one of the KEY pieces of human wisdom. If there is suffering or discomfort, there is resistance to the way things are. Period.

To truly master this principle, you must be able to transform your “attachment” to things being a certain way to a “preference.”

When you change your attachments to preferences, you are better able to cope with what is, rather than expending energy wishing things were different. This allows you to suffer less (less anger, sadness, fear, etc.). 

Even better, your happiness and inner peace are no longer controlled by external forces. 

You might prefer things to be such and so, but you’re not attached to them being that way.

To the degree a person is willing and able to let whatever happens be okay, they do not suffer. 

It’s as simple as that. 

  1. Your Mind Is a Heat-Seeking Missile

“Focus with passion on what you want.”

Whatever you focus on with the most frequency and passion is exactly what you are going to attract into your life. 

Many of us tend to focus on the negative. In our minds, we chew up unhappy incidents over and over. Pretty soon we’re on a hamster wheel of negative thoughts.

Those negative thoughts attract negative experiences like a magnet. 

Your brain always takes whatever you focus on as an instruction to go get that something and bring it to you. 

It doesn't make the distinction between “wanting” or “not wanting” something. 

When you focus on something that you do not want…

...you’re actually giving your mind instructions to create more of it. 

So, when you notice yourself focusing on what you do not want, change the focus to what you DO want. 

The good news, when you focus with passion on what you want, you will attract that into your life like a magnet.

  1. Responsibility is Empowerment

“Once you take responsibility things will begin to change.”

-Bill Harris

Bill taught that you are responsible for every feeling or behavior you have. 

While this may seem off putting at first, a closer look shows that this is an extraordinarily empowering concept. 

This doesn’t mean that you are to blame for every feeling or behavior you have. Taking personal responsibility is not about blame, but rather about personal power.

If someone or something outside of you is the cause of your feelings or behavior, you are powerless - a victim. 

As Bill put it: 

“Until you realize that you create your experience of your world, including all happiness and all suffering, you will be at the ‘effect' end of the cause and effect process. You, and your experience of life, will be controlled by and at the whim of whatever is happening around you.”

Your only chance for happiness would be to find perfect circumstances and to find a way to keep them that way. And you know how likely that is!

Once you take responsibility, though, you can take control and create things the way you want them.

I hear Bill's voice in my mind from time to time. His wisdom is anchored into my head and into my heart.  

Though we lost him too soon, his teachings stay with us.
