“Focusing on what you don’t want actually causes you to create or attract more of it.”
- Bill Harris
Issue #474 – Monday, May 12, 2025
If you’ve ever found yourself stuck—mentally, emotionally, or even professionally—there’s one question that can shift everything:
What am I focusing on right now?
This week’s Mind Power essay comes straight from our CEO, MaryEllen Tribby, and it’s a powerful reminder of just how much influence your focus has over your outcomes in life.
Whether it’s success or failure, confidence or fear, your brain is a magnet—and where you direct your attention determines what shows up.
As MaryEllen shares from both science and personal experience, this principle has the power to transform not just your thinking, but your entire life.
Enjoy!

Focus: The Most Powerful Magnet
for Success (or Failure)
By MaryEllen Tribby, CEO of Centerpointe
Remember those old-fashioned cameras—the kind that weren’t part of your phone? They had these intricate lenses that you had to focus by hand. The process was precise and technical, and your results were 100% determined by…
If the image was blurry, it wasn’t the camera’s fault. It was because the lens wasn’t focused properly. One small turn of the dial, just a tic to the left or right, and voilà—you had the perfect shot.
The beautiful thing about that?
You had the power to shift the focus—and in turn, shift the result.
And today, I want to remind you that the same is true for your life.
We all want the “tack-sharp,” beautiful, abundant, fulfilling life of our dreams, right? Well, here's how you get it:
Focus.
My beloved friend, mentor and Centerpointe Founder Bill Harris, said it over and over again:
“What you focus on determines your results.”
He was absolutely right. I’ve built my life, my business, and my family around this principle—and I’ve seen it work wonders, not just for myself, but for the thousands of people Centerpointe has served over the last 35 years.
Your brain is a magnet. A very powerful one. It zeroes in on what you give your energy and attention to—like a heat-seeking missile. And the more emotion, imagination, and intention you pour into those thoughts…
…the faster your brain works to make them your reality.
So what are you focusing on?
The success or the failure? The love or the heartbreak? The possibility or the problem?
Because the more energy you give to something—positive or negative—the more people, opportunities, and situations you draw toward that very thing.
The Science of Focus
This isn’t just personal development fluff. There’s science behind it.
There’s a part of your brain called the Reticular Activating System (RAS). It's a bundle of nerves at the base of your brainstem that acts like a filter. It decides what information gets through to your conscious mind.
It’s why you suddenly notice red cars everywhere the moment you decide to buy one.
It’s why your ears perk up when someone says your name in a noisy room.
It’s why a parent can sleep through a thunderstorm but wake instantly at the sound of their baby’s cry.
It’s also why, when you focus on fear, struggle, or negativity, your brain starts scanning the world for things to reinforce that fear or struggle. You literally program your brain to find obstacles instead of solutions.
My Personal Proof
If you know me, you know my family means the world to me—and if you know us, you know we are intensely passionate about sports, education, and doing the work to live a big, bold, beautiful life.
Let me share a little personal proof about what focus can do.
My oldest daughter, Mikaela, is now an attorney in New York. She finished her undergraduate degree in just 3 ½ years, earned her Master’s in only three semesters, graduated from NY Law School this past May, passed the bar on her first try—and was offered a job at the very first firm she interviewed with.
That’s focus. That’s intention. That’s the power of aligning your brain with your dreams.
My son Connor—who used to light up the football field—is now an entrepreneur working in the gold and silver markets. He’s building a life on his own terms, making smart, bold moves in a field that excites him.
That kind of clarity doesn’t come from chance. It comes from focus.
And my youngest, Delanie—remember when I said she dreamed of playing tennis professionally? She received over 40 Division 1 college offers. And today, she plays tennis for Tulane University on a full athletic scholarship. She is thriving, on and off the court.
But here’s what’s important to remember:
None of this happened by accident.
Each one of them had moments of doubt, fear, exhaustion, and frustration. But each one of them learned how to focus their minds—on the outcome they wanted. Not the one they were afraid of.
I remember when Delanie used to get nervous before matches. She would say she was afraid of losing. And I would gently remind her that “I don’t want to lose” is not the same as “I want to win.” The brain doesn’t understand “don’t.” It just hears lose and says: Got it! Let’s focus on that!
So she started saying, “I want to win. I’m going to win. I know I can win.” She trained her mind like she trained her body—to visualize the ace serve, the perfect drop shot, the feeling of holding the trophy.
And it worked. Not just for her—but for anyone willing to do the same.
Train Your Brain
It’s not easy. It’s not automatic. “Positive thinking” is not our default wiring.
From the time we lived in caves, our brains have been wired to scan for danger. That’s how we survived. It’s also why your brain naturally veers toward worry, fear, and doubt.
But that habit can be changed. You can retrain your brain to default to power, not panic. To possibility, not fear.
And please—don’t beat yourself up when those old, negative thought patterns sneak in. That’s just your ancient programming doing its thing. Your job now is to notice it—and gently shift your focus.
Catch the negative thought. Flip it. Replace it with the outcome you do want.
Because when you focus on what’s beautiful, what’s working, and what’s possible…
…that powerful magnet in your mind will start to pull in the people, ideas, and opportunities that support your vision.
You’ve got this.
I believe in you.
And I know that no matter what you’re facing right now—there’s a stronger, wiser, more powerful version of you just waiting to emerge.
All you have to do…
…is shift your focus.
