“A life spent resisting what can't be successfully resisted is a life of chronic frustration and suffering.”

Issue #525 – Monday, April 27, 2026
Sometimes it feels like you’re stuck in a season that just won’t end.
You're pushing hard. You're doing everything right. And yet nothing seems to move.
That feeling is more common than you think. And it turns out, science has something very interesting to say about it.
That's why today I'm sharing an insightful essay from Mind Power Managing Editor Ryan Standifird about what researchers are calling "psychological flexibility" and why learning to go with the flow isn't just good wisdom. It's actually good brain science.
Ryan opens up about a personal turning point with his two young sons and how it taught him something profound about the natural rhythms of life. He also walks you through three practical ways to stop fighting the current and start moving with it.
By the time you finish reading, I think you'll look at your own hard seasons very differently.
Cheers,

Stop Swimming Against the Current
Why the Secret to a Better Life Is Learning to Flow
By Ryan Standifird
Have you ever noticed that life seems to move in seasons?
Not just spring, summer, fall, and winter. I'm talking about the other seasons. The ones no one warns you about.
The season where everything feels hard. Where you're exhausted before the day even starts. Where it seems like no matter how hard you try, you just can't get ahead.
And then… almost without warning…
…things start to shift.
The fog lifts. The gears start turning again. And suddenly, life doesn't feel like you're pushing a boulder uphill anymore.
It just… flows.
When the Current Finally Turns
I've been living through one of these shifts lately, and it caught me completely off guard.
My oldest son, Jack, is three and a half now. And for the first time, bedtime doesn't feel like a hostage negotiation. He gets his pajamas on. He brushes his teeth. He climbs into bed and actually stays there.
If you're a parent, you know what a big deal that is.
Meanwhile, my youngest, Mylo, just turned one and a half. He's walking, he's pointing at things, he's starting to use words (“Okay” is his favorite at the moment).
We can actually communicate now - which means fewer meltdowns for both of us.
And here's the part that really gets me…
They're starting to get along.
I'll catch them playing together in the living room, laughing at something only they understand, and my heart just melts. A year ago, they were at each other’s throats constantly fighting over toys. Now? They're becoming little buddies.
Life is flowing in a way it wasn't before. And the beautiful thing is, I didn't force it to happen.
It just changed. Because that's what life does.
The Science of Going with the Flow
Here's the thing most of us don't realize…
Fighting against change - resisting the hard seasons, clinging to the good ones - doesn't just feel bad.
It actually makes things worse.
Researchers at Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin published a study in 2024 looking at something called psychological flexibility - the ability to “go with the flow” even when you didn’t like where that current was headed.
So what did they find?
People who developed greater psychological flexibility experienced significant improvements in their quality of life and reductions in symptoms of anxiety, depression, and stress no matter what happened.
In other words, the people who learned to “ride the wave” instead of fighting the current felt better across the board.
And that’s not all!
A separate body of research published in The Lancet Planetary Health found that the ability to enter a "flow state" - that feeling of being totally absorbed, focused, and “in the zone” - is actually blocked when people avoid or resist uncomfortable thoughts and situations.
What - what?
It may sound counterintuitive, but it actually makes perfect sense when you think about how your brainwaves react to your emotional state.
Because it turns out that the very act of resisting reality is what prevents you from finding your flow.
It's like trying to enjoy a river float while paddling upstream the whole time. You're exhausted, you're frustrated, and you're not going anywhere.
But when you relax? When you stop fighting and let the current carry you?
That's when the flow happens.
Centerpointe Founder Bill Harris called it, “Let whatever happens be okay.”
And it’s one of the most powerful concepts we can learn.
So What Does This Mean for You?
It means that the hard seasons of life - the sleepless nights, the relationship struggles, the career setbacks - aren't permanent.
Nothing is.
And the sooner we can accept that, the sooner we can start to feel the flow return.
We can't control the current. We can't control the seasons. But we CAN control how we respond to them.
Here are three ways to start:
Tip #1: Stop Trying to Fix Everything at Once
When life feels stuck, it's tempting to go into overdrive tackling every problem, micromanaging every detail, pushing harder and harder to "make things work."
But that's like standing in a river and trying to push the water downstream faster. It doesn't work, and you'll just wear yourself out trying.
Instead, pick one area that needs attention and give it some space. Sometimes the best thing you can do is step back, take a breath, and trust that things are already in motion even if you can't see it yet.
Tip #2: Recognize the Season You're In
One of the most powerful things you can do for your mental health is to simply name the season you're going through.
"This is a hard season. And that's okay."
Or: "This is a season of growth. I'm going to enjoy it."
When you label what's happening, you take away some of its power to overwhelm you. You stop reacting and start observing. And that shift from reaction to observation is where awareness truly begins.
Tip #3: Create Space for Stillness
You can't hear the current when your mind is full of noise.
A daily practice of meditation helps you quiet the mental clutter and reconnect with what's actually happening in your life instead of what you're afraid might happen.
Research consistently shows that meditation increases both psychological flexibility and the likelihood of experiencing flow. It trains your brain to stop fighting and start floating.
And that's a skill that pays dividends in every area of your life.
Feng Shui for Your Mind
Speaking of clearing the clutter and restoring flow…
If this essay resonated with you, I want to tell you about something new we've been working on here at Centerpointe.
It's called the Harmonious Mind Suite and it's essentially Feng Shui for your brain.
You know how Feng Shui works in a physical space, right? A practitioner walks through your home, identifies where the energy is blocked, and makes adjustments to get things flowing again.
The Harmonious Mind Suite does the same thing but for the space inside your head.
It's a collection of nine powerful 30-minute Holosync soundtracks, each one tuned to the Feng Shui compass that represents the areas of your life: career, relationships, creativity, health, abundance, and more. Each track uses Holosync's proprietary brainwave entrainment technology to gently guide your brain into the specific state where that area's blockages can easily release.
Think of it this way: if life has seasons, the Harmonious Mind Suite helps you clear the path so the next season can arrive a little sooner - and a little smoother.
If you've been feeling stuck in any area of your life, this might be exactly what you need.
You can check out the Harmonious Mind Suite right here.
The Current Is Always Moving
Here's what I want you to take away from all this…
The hard seasons don't last forever. Neither do the easy ones.
And that's not a sad thing. It's a freeing thing.
Because it means you don't have to have it all figured out right now. You don't have to force the river. You just have to be willing to move with it.
I look at my boys playing together in the living room, and I think about all those difficult nights when Linda and I were running on fumes, wondering if it would ever get easier.
It did.
Not because we forced it. But because we kept showing up, kept adapting, and let the current carry us forward.
The same is true for you.
Stop swimming against the current. Take a breath. And trust the flow.
You've got this.

The Great Matter of Life & Death
By Bill Harris
What if accepting the impermanence of life could set you free?
In this powerful episode, Centerpointe Founder Bill Harris tackles one of humanity's deepest struggles: our resistance to the temporary nature of everything - including ourselves.
This episode explores why we create elaborate stories about afterlives, chase immortality through wealth and power, and construct the illusion of a permanent "self" that we desperately want to protect.
If you've ever wondered how to truly enjoy life while knowing that nothing lasts forever, this episode offers a path forward.
